tunes: what's in your heavy rotation?

kriehle and i saw Animal Collective last night -- fun show. pulsing, rhythmic stuff w/ good pop hooks if a little too much of that rockin-behind-electronic-gadgets thing and seeming fear of their own voices...

anyway, what's your hot music right now? top 5. here are mine:

  1. Luke Temple (mp3 of Private Shipwreck)
  2. John Vanderslice (mp3 of Time Travel is Lonely)
  3. Panda Bear
  4. the dodos (thanks to arh2 for introducing them to us. listen to the polish on their audio page, but then i'd like you to check out the videos. the recording quality is terrible, but the energy kicked up!)
  5. Georges Moustaki

John Vanderslice continues

John Vanderslice continues to climb up the list. love that guy.

i'm also excited to check out Four Tet -- i'm intrigued by the bits and pieces i've heard.

Beach House

Beach House is the band's name. Here's their media page -- the video on the left is for Master of None, my favorite song. The whole album is pretty good.

The Periodic Label

The Periodic Label: "The Open Source Record Label"
All of the songs are available for free download.

Some good Brooklyn Bands here from ROCK to folk to Rockwell that you can listen to on their free Audio Player Jukebox, or go directly to their pages to listen or download. My faves:

Andy, are they using an open source platform for the site?

heavy rotation

What's in heavy rotation in my brain right about now? Let's see:

1. Chopin's Nocturne in C# minor. I'm currently learning it on the piano after watching The Pianist a couple weeks ago, but I keep hearing the opening melody from Chopin's Andante Spianato after the opening chords. Does that count as two?

2. Sem Contenção by Bebel Gilberto

3. Survivalism by Nine Inch Nails

4. The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song by The Flaming Lips

5. Conceived by Beth Orton

Honorable mention goes to Zappa plays Zappa doing Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy which I saw last summer on their recent tour through CA.

Second honorable mention goes to Cansei der Sexy for Music Is My Hot Hot Sex. Stupid iPod commercials.

There's also Bach's Prelude No. 1 from the Well-Tempered Clavier since it's a favorite, and his Inventions Nos. 1 and 13 since I'm still trying to master them.

Wait, that's like ten or eleven. I give up. Brain overcrowded. Pick your own favorite five from the above. :-)

Top 5? I am not sure why it

Top 5? I am not sure why it is so, but I just don't listen to much music anymore. Sometimes, listening to the news back and forth from school, my mind gets fuzzy and I think I am listening to music, and then, when I snap back to clarity, I allow the thought to carry over, and I realize I am listening to music indeed--and I even dance to it. So much of the news is crap, though, even relatively free of commercialism as NPR is--stinky carrot-hanging, go-through-the-motions--heartless, false crap. It's not good music, but that's what I usually snap my finger to.

I need music, though. It's jazz and classical that I long for the most--but not because I was ever a big fan. It's just better music than the rest. If you want music, this or that random snatch reminds me, you can feast on jazz or classical, or you can take alms from Justin Timberlake. I'm bringing sexy back--yea. (I found out that Bjork had something to do with that song or album.)

Now, I am grateful to Suzy because she helped me be more open to music--to hear it as the celebration it is, and to be grateful for any which way it comes. Because of her, I dig Elton John and Simon & Garfunkle, and even, believe it or not, Neil Diamond (though, I still feel certain that if you aren't laughing at Neil Diamond, you are missing the point--it's not his point by intention, but it is the quintessential point nevertheless). And I love Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles and Michael Jackson because of her too. And then there are all the Musicals we like...

Anyway, the point is, the newest stuff I like is Radiohead, but even that (I haven't hear the new album yet) seems like a different time. This, I guess, is all to say, I can't contribute much here, but I do want to fill this void in my life. I'm grateful for the post, bor (and especially the links).
