i enjoyed reading an article in today's NY Times about bicycling in New York City, titled The Wild Bunch.
the author, a cyclist, gave some glimpses into the recent history of attitudes/policies towards biking in New York City, and advocated some really sensible suggestions for cyclists to further their own cause and continue to gain respect and appreciation from other citizens and policy-makers alike, i.e. suggestions for more sustainable transportation options for the city in general.
i argue light-heartedly with my cycling friends about the very points he advocates:
in the end, i advocate for these type of common sense practices because, like the author of the article, i feel strongly that they're the best way to further the cause of cycling rights and development as a transportation alternative.
file this under: car culture is horribly broken; what are we going to do about it.

here is Streetsblog's write-up. tons of comments, but a good media literacy "take-away" right at the top: the Times article title ("The Wild Bunch") and leading photo ran counter to the tone, spirit, and conclusions of the article itself, and were counterproductive to the larger conversation.
