To Kill a Mockingbird

i'm excited to be reading a novel again. this time it's To Kill a Mockingbird, which i haven't read since high school -- long enough ago that i might as well be reading it for the first time.

the inspiration, of course, comes from the middle child in the photo above: Scout, the oldest, wisest, and yet most innocent of JAG and the Suze's triplets.

i'd love to have anyone join me, but am already tearing through!

Finished Part One

Well, I am going slowly, obviously--in fact, I have not read a word this time around without Scout sitting quietly in my arms--and those chances are few and far between. Nevertheless, here are a few great lines from Atticus in Chapter 11:

"Scout,...when summer comes you'll have to keep your head about far worse things . . . it's not fair for you and Jem, I know that, but sometimes we have to make the best of things, and the way we conduct ourselves when the chips are down--well, all I can say is, when you and Jem are grown, maybe you'll look back on this with some compassion and some feeling that I didn't let you down. This case, Tom Robinson's case, is something that goes to the very essence of a man's conscience--Scout, I couldn't go to church and worship God if I didn't try to help that man."

"They're certainly entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions,...but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience."

"I do my best to love everybody. . . I'm hard put, sometimes--baby, it's never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn't hurt you."

"I wanted you to see something about her--I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what."

Hey, awesome!

I too am reading To Kill a Mockingbird--am reading it aloud to Scout and her two brothers. For some reason, they just aren't all that into it yet. But I'm plugging away.

I just finished chapter three, Scout's first day at school. It makes me think of Jonah, actually, who just had his first day of school, didn't he?

Yea, Atticus--and that Maycomb County--do places like that still exist? And brave Jem, whose mother died early in his life--and, of course, our narrator Scout, inquisitive, intrepid, compassionate--yes compassionate especially (--she's naturally compassionate--without ever trying to appear so--just common sense--cut-to-the-chase type compassion). An interesting choice of narrator.

I love the book, love the characters, have taught it before, but the truth be known, Scout was Suzy's idea--the name, I mean. The kid was both of our ideas...

i'm having a great time with

i'm having a great time with this book, taking it in totally differently than i did as a teenager...

most importantly, the parenting aspects are hitting home hard: Atticus with Scout and Jem.

i just finished the scene where the kids half-wittedly jump to Atticus' defense from the lynching mob outside of the jailhouse. the interaction between Scout and Atticus really tore me up.

Soon Enough!

I'm definitely wanting to join in on this discussion. My first step is to get to winter break and then I'll pick up a copy of the book and join you two.

I can imagine that the reading will be different as we imagine JAG's little one and her future impact on the world. I also imagine that being a parent, rather than a teenager, would change just about any reading of any book.

I look forward to joining you two, I just hope it will be soon enough! :)

Kaede

Yes Kaede

That would be good stuff. I am still only at Chapter V. Scout just explained how she heard Boo laughing after she crashed into the Radley house inside the tire...

Keep it coming...

hey, great to hear from you,

hey, great to hear from you, Kaede!

i finished the book a while back and it's quickly being crowded out of my brain. but i thoroughly enjoyed reading it and would love to chat if you have any comments as you go.

JAG and ARH1, I truly can't

JAG and ARH1,

I truly can't wait to read the book and am sure I'll have questions or comments to put up on this board. I have a goal of being more involved here this year--we'll see if I actually pull it off! ;)

Talk to you both soon!

Still Going

Well don't be in too great of a hurry. I stil am only at Chapter 10. But I am loving it. I tell Suzy what happens in each chapter and we both grow nostalgic as though we were remember our own life history. There's more power in this book than people seem to be able to articulate--though, they must feel it also. I would love to try to articulate it here with you, Kaede.

Oh, arh1, chapter nine: Atticus telling his brother Jack about the error in evading Scout's question about a "whore," and the reason Jack was right to give her a whoopping--for her strong-headedness, rather than for her profanity. I was thinking about your comment above when I read that.

June's My Hope

I likely won't be able to even consider picking up the book until the summer but am glad to know that you're still open for discussing the novel whenever I do get to it.

JAG, the triplets are amazing. I just can't wait to spend more time with them. And I look forward to reading TKM so I can see why you and Suz have chosen that name for your beautiful little girl. :)
