it's 12:03 by my watch so happy birthday to RED, the smoothest media educator, bundt-cake baker, medicine ball-tosser and DI-founder-in-absentia in NY, NY. and not to mention one of the best drivers i know.
cheers, RED. i raise my glass in your general direction. i wish i was not out of town for the cycling tour de Brooklyn.
i enjoyed reading an article in today's NY Times about bicycling in New York City, titled The Wild Bunch.
the author, a cyclist, gave some glimpses into the recent history of attitudes/policies towards biking in New York City, and advocated some really sensible suggestions for cyclists to further their own cause and continue to gain respect and appreciation from other citizens and policy-makers alike, i.e. suggestions for more sustainable transportation options for the city in general.
i saw the car with cracked windshield yesterday, a block from my son's school and the incident i posted about a few months ago. the ghost bike is still there.
while i'd hoped the windshield damage was done by some other type of accident, or a trusty baseball bat like we saw in Boston over the weekend, apparently it was the impact of a human body.
a cyclist was hit and killed by a school bus today, right outside my son's school. we saw the terrible aftermath right as we got there in the morning (i did anyway; i think he didn't realize what was going on), and it is just so saddening and infuriating.
since moving here, i've ranted to many folks about the terrible car culture here. unfortunately, it's not specific to this neighborhood or this city... people are fucking obscene in their cars. there's no other way to say it.
kriehle and i stepped out of our place on thursday night. a car sped past us on Thomas, right through the stop sign at 12th ave, and proceeded to be smashed into by a car moving down 12th, spinning 270 degrees before stopping on the far side of the street. luckily, everyone walked away.
