the boy and i saw an incredible street musician on thursday at the 34th st station. the boy caught his name, thankfully: William Ruiz.
we had a bus to catch, otherwise we'd have stayed a long time and done a jig.
the video and tinny audio don't do him justice -- this guy wails.
if you live in NYC, look out for him.
it's coming up (almost exactly) on one year since i moved from Seattle to Brooklyn. much has changed for me, and i've got all sorts of new music coming in. but i'm just starting to rediscover one of the things about Seattle that will always stick with me...
i must emphasize again how spectacular Seattle-based KEXP is, and the awesomeness of DJ Riz in particular (though there are many other gems on show at the station...).
As some of you have heard, Michael Jackson died yesterday. I know that there is much about the self-proclaimed king of pop that is ugly and ignoble, but I want to appreciate what I have always appreciated about him--his music, which I am sure is as much the weird and scary side of him as the incredibly talented, beautiful little innocent guy from Gary, Indiana side of him. I don't want to dissect him. I just want accept the gift of him--the song and dance and joy that rose out of his peculiar tribulations.
A group called Snake Tooth got together last year and played some old favorites by Neil Young at Bar 4.
Folks in the crowd got involved, requested songs and sang along. Hell, some even picked up banjos, harmonicas, and bass guitars and started played with the band. It was touching. It sure was fine.
sometimes there's only one song for you at a particular moment. mine right now is above.
anyone else?

been enjoying the Dosh album, Wolves and Wishes.
